Rameswaram is in Tamilnadu and located on Pamban Island. It’s known for Ramanathaswamy Temple, one of the Twelve Jyotirlingas in India. Temple is the Hindu pilgrimage site having ornate corridors, huge sculpted pillars and sacred water tanks. It is one of the top religious place in India.
Rameswaram is also visited by people to see the ghost town Dhanushkodi. Dhanushkodi is just 10 odd km long and now abandoned since 1964 due to cyclone in Rameshwaram. Dhanushkodi is a place where God Rama is said to have built his bridge (Ram Setu) to cross into Lanka.
You can drive on the upto South East end of the Pamban island. It’s a straight 20 kms stretch with absolute no turn. Last 10 kms is really a wonderful travel and fun. You are driving in the middle of two oceans; Bay of Bangal and Indian Ocean and finally reach a point, the Ashoka Pillar. You can park your vehicle and enter the beach which is common for both the oceans. It’s really a wonderful beach with crystal clear water. If you visit Rameshwaram, do not miss Dhanushkodi.
