BELUR – HALEBIDU

Referred to as Hoysaleswara Temple, it’s a 12th century built Hindu Temple dedicated to Shiva. The temple is a twin-temple dedicated to Hoysaleswara (the king) and Santaleswara (the queen) Shiva lingas. It has two Nandi shrines outside, where each seated Nandi face the respective Shiva linga situated inside the temple.

The temple complex is placed on a platform. The platform is 15 feet wide around the outer walls of the temple, meant for the visitor to walk on and view the artwork clockwise while completing the pradakshina of the temple.

Temple is remarkable for its sculptures, inscriptions in North Indian and South Indian scripts. There are many friezes which narrate Hindu text from Ramayan & Mahabharat. Carving is extraordinarily astonishing and it will provoke you with surprise how skilfully the sculptures have been made.

The temple artwork is largely intact despite having invaded in history. You can go on clicking as many photos of sculptures as you can. It will not leave your eyesight even after returning back home from a day journey.
