National Chambal Sanctuary, also called the National Chambal Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary, is a 5,400 sq. kms. protected area located on the Chambal River near the tri-point of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Within the sanctuary, the pristine Chambal River cuts through mazes of ravines (BIHAD) and hills with many sandy beaches.
Chambal River is known as the cleanest river in India and it really appears so while cruising inside the river. Its protected and maintained for the crocodile breading, the critically endangered gharial. Also Ganges River Dolphin is a keystone species of the sanctuary.
The National Chambal Sanctuary is listed as an important bird area and least 320 species of resident and migratory birds inhabit the sanctuary. Migratory Birds from Siberia visit during the winter season and top most attraction is the India Skimmer. Other species includes Sarus Crane, Pallas’s fish eagle and Indian courser.
Few more winter visitors include black billed tern, red crested pochard, ferruginous pochard and bar headed goose. Other species include great thick-knee, greater flamingo, brown hawk owl.
