The Veerabhadra temple is in Lepakshi town of Anantpur district, down south near the Bangalore. Temple is almost 500 yrs old and was built in the 16th century and built in the Vijaynagara style which included carvings and paintings at almost every where on the temple dome. The paintings and sculptures carved within the temple area on temple walls, details the scenes from Ramayan and Mahabharat and the other popular old stories and they are well preserved.
There is a very large Nandi at a very close distance, about 200 metres away from the temple which is carved from a single block of stone, which is said to be one of the largest of its type in the world.
One of the pillar holding the temple mandapa area is not touching the ground and there is a gap between the base of the pillar and the ground and appears to be hanging from the ceiling. It’s another attraction of visiting this temple. A cloth or a thread can easily pass through the gap between pillar and ground. It’s a rock solid pillar weighing in a ton and still a mystery how such a heavy weight is supported from the ceiling.
There are many sculptures on the columns and ceilings and those are of ancient saints, guardians, musicians, dancers.
